Virginia F. "Ginny" Moody, age 91, of Cedar Lake, IN, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family Wednesday, November 25, 2009. She is survived by her sons, Michael Moody and John (Sharon) Johnson; daughter, Peggy (Kent) Shepherd; grandchildren, Michael (Wendy), Sander (Laura), Edwin IV (Keira), Robby, Shannon (Bryan), Kelly (Mark), Matt and Erin (Sean); 19 great-grandchildren and a very large number of people to whom she will always be known as "Grandma." She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Edwin, founding Chief of Police for the Town of Cedar Lake; her eldest son, Edwin III in 1974; daughter-in-law, Susan in 2002; and great-grandson, Makai in 2006. A funeral service will be held Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Cedar Lake United Methodist Church, 7124 W 137th PL, Cedar Lake with Pastor Tom Shanahan officiating. Burial will follow at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends may meet with the family on December 2, 2009 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Burdan Funeral Home, 12901 Wicker Ave, Cedar Lake. Virginia retired after more than 20 years as Director of South Lake County Community Services Division of the Lake County Economic Opportunity Council (LCEOC). Prior to her retirement as Director, Virginia owned and operated the lakeside Cedar Lake Dairy Queen for 7 years and had previously been a licensed beautician and homemaker. Virginia was a 58 year member of the Cedar Lake United Methodist Church as well as a founding member of the Board of Directors for the Cedar Lake Boy's and Girl's Club. She was very active and supportive in her sons' Scouting lives. She loved playing golf and was a long time league player at South Shore County Club up until she decided to give the game a rest at 89. In addition, she was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Keenagers. During her lifetime, Virginia was the recipient of many community service and civic awards. In lieu of flowers and cards, the family requests that donations may be made in her loving memory to the Cedar Lake United Methodist Church or Cedar Lake Boy's and Girl's Club.
